The idea that hypnosis is sleep comes historically from one of the ways hypnotists have approached getting their subjects to enter a hypnotic state, by giving the instruction to “Sleep” as a cue to enter hypnosis. Later it was realised that hypnosis wasn’t sleep and more recently whilst researchers haven’t yet found all of the brain activity changes associated with the experience of hypnosis, some clear changes have been found when test subjects brain activity was measured at rest, remembering something and experiencing hypnosis. This is distinctly different to brain activity during sleep.

During natural trance states your attention is focussed on one thing, so that you become less aware of other things going on around you. For example, when watching a film, reading a book or daydreaming about your next holiday!

A person experiencing hypnosis will only undertake actions that do not violate their core morals and values. In hypnosis the therapist does not impose their will onto their client but works together to help them achieve the positive changes they would like to make. To do this they help their client to draw on their own internal strengths and resources to meet the goals that they set for themselves.

The opposite impression is often given during stage hypnosis shows. However, the bottom line is, if you don’t want to “Quack like a duck” in this setting, as in any other, then you just won’t do it!

This is a little like having a normal conversation where we remember the important points, but don’t tend to remember everything said word for word.

James Braid (1795-1860) played an important role in the establishment of hypnosis as a therapeutic approach in the UK. However, it is often stated that he invented the word hypnosis is not true. In fact the term “hypn” was previously used by Etienne Felix d’Henin de Cuvillers (1755-1841) in France.
