This pioneering 8 month hypnotherapy course has been developed to meet your needs as a health care professional in the 21st century. Providing you with more than simple adjunctive skills, the Medical Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy (MDCH) effectively integrates into your medical practice. The course is eclectic in nature, so does not stick to one particular theoretical model. The benefit of this is that you will learn to become a well-rounded therapist as you explore how to apply analytical, cognitive, behavioural and goal-directed hypnotherapeutic approaches in the most appropriate way in order to treat a wide variety of presenting symptoms. The buzz-word in therapy today is ‘pluralism’, which means applying the most appropriate approach (or approaches) most suitable for your patient. This is based on their presenting symptom, needs, personality and expectations for therapy. The MDCH teaches you how to do this in a safe, confident and ethical way. The skills and insight learned on the course can be put to use immediately. We pride ourselves in teaching you how to use hypnotherapy safely as a useful clinical tool capable of enhancing other clinical treatments. You will gain understanding in the following areas, among others:
Some of the medical professionals who have successfully completed our course have since established their own hypnotherapy clinics. Others have introduced hypnotherapy to their place of work within the NHS. Some, though, find it satisfactory to only use hypnotherapy as an adjunct to their established speciality.
The MDCH is valued as part of continuous professional development by many doctors, dentists, nurses and those in mental health services.
Your MDCH course comprises eight intermittent weekends, independent guided study, and personal tutorials sessions if you request them. You will be provided with comprehensive weekend workbooks that deliver the core learnings of the course and contain strategies, theoretical background, hypnosis scripts, references, appendices and ongoing checkpoint activities that are designed to help you self-assess your progress. To enhance your learning experience, you are strongly encouraged to read course material in advance of attending each weekend. In addition, you are also encouraged to carry out wider reading of relevant books and journal articles to broaden your knowledge beyond the course materials.
Your course culminates on the last weekend with a two-part assessment. You will be asked to demonstrate an induction and a deepener, followed by ego-boosting and safe awakening. Your examiner will also ask you to provide a protocol for the treatment of a given condition.
For the second part of your assessment you are asked to submit a written paper exploring the protocol for treating a given condition. You will be expected to research current journals regarding the condition and to provide a rationale for the proposed treatment. You will need to submit this paper within a month of completing of the MDCH.
You will also have access to our online e-learning environment where you can post questions, interact with lecturers and other students on your course. Plenty of resource material is available to download that includes an example assessment essay and other learning media.
As part of your course requirements, and in accordance with good ethical practice, you are required to join the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis (BSCH) at the start of the course. You will then be able to obtain public liability and indemnity insurance to practice hypnotherapy. Do check your existing policies to see if you are covered. The BSCH is a national professional body whose aim is to promote and assure high standards in the practice of hypnotherapy. As a student member of the BSCH you will also have on-line access to three major hypnotherapy journals: The American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis, Contemporary Hypnosis, and The International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis.
These are optional and you can arrange one or more with individual course lecturers on an ad hoc basis. Tutorials can form an important and integral part of your training. At these sessions, you can explore areas of the course that you would like to gain greater understanding of, get helpful guidance for your exam and, if you wish, practice techniques that you have learnt on the course.
The MDCH is open to you if you are a medical doctor or dentist. You can also attend if you are a nurse, paramedic, osteopath, chiropractor, clinical psychologist, health psychologist or physiotherapist who has a minimum of a BSc (Hons) or the equivalent, in your respective profession.
Once you have successfully completed the MDCH you will be competent to enter professional practice as a Clinical Hypnotherapist under clinical supervision. You will also be able to use the designating letters MDCH after your name. When you graduate from the MDCH course you will be accepted for Associate Membership of the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis – BSCH(Assoc). As an Associate member of the BSCH you will also be able to apply for membership of the CNHC (Complimentary and Natural Healthcare Council).
Once you successfully complete the MDCH you have the option to continue your studies by attending a variety of short specialist courses specifically designed for qualified practitioners. These explore more complex presenting symptoms and advanced therapeutic techniques. These courses do not have examinations. However, if you wish to submit for examination, this can lead to achieving the award of Advanced Practitioner Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy.
